One of the country's most popular video game conferences is opening a companion show to the public—a move coming amid increasing competition for clout in the gaming industry.
The Entertainment Software Association announced Monday the creation of E3 Live, a three-day public event that will be held in conjunction with the association's popular E3 trade show in June. E3 is open only to industry representatives and the media, but E3 Live will be open to all gamers and will feature a variety of events to keep attendees entertained.
Both shows will be held in Los Angeles, with E3 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and E3 Live at L.A. Live, an entertainment complex adjacent to the center.
"E3 Live will give gamers the chance to test-drive exciting new games, interact with some of their favorite developers, and be among the first in the world to enjoy groundbreaking game experiences," ESA CEO Michael Gallagher said. "For fans of video games, this will be an event like no other."
E3 has long been an event where video game publishers go to unveil their upcoming projects. But the show's influence in the industry has been waning in recent years due to increasing competition from other video game shows that are open to the public, allowing gamers of all stripes a chance to play upcoming games and generate buzz for the ones they like.
In recent months, four major video game developers have pulled out of E3. The new event will give gamers the opportunity to try upcoming games and interact with developers, which isn't possible at the main show.
E3 Live will also feature a variety of events, such as a live concert of Pokémon music. The association says it is expecting a sold-out crowd at the show. http://prn.to/1XN4BE8
